CB1100R SHIM CHECK , do i need to remove fairing

hello,
i have started to do my RB shims this morning, my first impression is i will have to remove the fairing ,coils and fairing support bar to get the cam cover off.
please can anybody tell me if there is a quicker way before i pull my bike to bits unecesserily ,
does the bar that goes across the cam cover have to be there ? it looks like its for a steering damper ?

I removed mine Steve – unless anyone knows of a better way..?

i have removed the small fairing brackets and coils and the fairing has fallen forward enough to get the cover off.
